Light-Weight Livestock Pen

The Light-Weight Livestock Pen

Livestock Pens are special purpose containers for palletized shipping of bulk livestock. Livestock pens are lightweight and robust. The units have no base, and use the pallet to serve as the floor.

Livestock pens are delivered flat, and can be erected by a single man without tools or fasteners. Each pen is secured to a pallet with standard cargo straps before loading.

Livestock Pen Secured to a Standard Pallet

The livestock is typically loaded into each pen on the tarmac, or away from the aircraft. Animals are loaded through a vertical gate on either or both ends of the pens. The entire pen and its contents are than netted, and loaded into the aircraft as standard cargo. The pens can be loaded in either direction in the aircraft.

The rugged aluminum and fiberglass construction of the pens make them easy to clean with a high pressure hose or steam cleaner.

The livestock pens shown here meet IATA requirements for the transport of animals. They are designed for use on all of the pallets and aircraft listed below.

Configurations

Livestock pens can be pre-configured to form a standard single pen, or two individual half pens with two loading gates. The various pen configurations and sizes are shown below. Pen configurations are dependant upon the size and temperament of the animals to be shipped. Reference the IATA Live Animal Handbook, for animal grouping information.

Option Equipment
The Livestock Pens are simple containers, and no optional equipment is required.

Required Equipment
The following equipment is required to use the above equipment on any of the aircraft listed below. The pallets and tie-down straps are generally supplied by the carrier, and are made available to the shipper in advance.
Pallets For any one of the standard pallet sizes listed below. You'll need one pallet per unit.
Straps Standard (5,000 lbs.) aircraft tie-down straps keep this container on the pallet. They are sometimes scarce around airports, so let us know if you'll need us to supply them for you.
Nets Standard TSO cargo nets - one per pallet. Throw it over the pen and secure it to the pallet after loading. The high walls of the pen will keep the net off the heads of all but the largest livestock - and the large ones don't care.
Bedding While not absolutely a requirement, we list it here because some form of bedding is always used. This can vary from a rubber mat for traction, to an adsorbent media to reduce moisture and bacteria on longer flights. We can supply whatever you need if you don't already have your own. If you're unsure what's best for a typical flight or destination, you can look it up in the IATA Live Animal Handbook - or just ask us.
Plastic Sheeting Again, not an absolute requirement, but plastic sheeting is usually laid on the floor, and taped a foot or so high on the outside of the pens. This insures animal waste doesn't escape the container during flight or unloading. If you need it, let us know and we'll get it for you.
